Grutas Tolantongo Map: The Two Valleys and Where Everything Is
Most of the confusion about this place comes from one thing: it is not a single pool complex. It is a canyon with distinct zones, one of them across the valley and one of them a separate entrance entirely. Here is how the pieces fit.
Where Tolantongo sits on a map of Mexico
The canyon is at San Cristóbal, in the municipality of Cardonal, Hidalgo, in the Mezquital Valley — roughly four hours by road north of Mexico City and about twelve hours’ round trip from Querétaro. It sits at around 1,280 metres at the pools, with the canyon walls rising well above that. From the highway there is no sign any of it is down there.
The canyon, top to bottom
Arriving under your own steam or on a tour, the sequence is the same and it is worth having in your head before you set off:
- The rim. The Gran Cañón viewpoint and its small chapel, where almost everybody stops for the first photograph.
- The descent. Twenty-three hairpin curves down the canyon wall.
- The valley floor. The thermal river, the main grotto and the steam tunnel.
- The terraces above the river. Paraíso Escondido, the stepped pools.
- Across the valley. Las Pocitas, reached by shuttle or on foot.
- Further up. La Gloria, a separate section with its own entrance.
Paraíso Escondido and the main grotto
These two are the core of the site and they sit close together, one above the other. The pools are on terraces cut into the cliff; the grotto, the tunnel and the river are on the valley floor below them, linked by a long flight of wet steps. Almost every photograph you have seen of Tolantongo is one of these two places.

Las Pocitas, across the valley
A separate set of shallower built pools on the other side of the valley, with a slide, a second suspension bridge and a water grotto of its own. Reaching it means either the shuttle, which charges a small fee each way, or a walk of about twenty-five minutes. Both start from the main terrace area.
It is quieter than the main pools precisely because getting there takes a decision.
La Gloria, and why it is a different trip
La Gloria is further up the valley with its own entrance, its own pools, waterfalls and viewpoints, and a river source with a pool six metres across. It is not somewhere you wander to from the main terraces on a day trip. Two departures out of Mexico City are built around it instead of the main canyon, and one adds it to a food-led day.
Treat it as a second visit rather than a section of the first, and pick your departure accordingly.
What the layout means for your day
The shape of the canyon decides more about a visit than any timetable does. Everything is either above you or below you, and the only flat walking is along the valley floor beside the river. That has three practical consequences worth planning around.
The first is that you will climb at the end of the day rather than the start, after several hours in hot water, which is when the steps feel longest. The second is that the two halves of the site — the terraces above and the river, grotto and tunnel below — are close together in distance and far apart in effort, so most people do one, rest, then do the other. The third is that Las Pocitas and La Gloria are decisions rather than detours: neither is somewhere you drift into while walking between the pools.
If your departure gives you four hours, plan on the terraces and one of the caves and let the rest go. Five and a half brings the river in comfortably. Seven, which one departure offers, is the first number that lets you take the whole main canyon at a walking pace instead of a schedule.
