Guided trips out of Mexico City start at $79 per person and run up to several hundred dollars for a vehicle nobody else is booked into. The price is the operator’s and changes with the season and the date you pick. The rock underfoot is wet, uneven and in places sharp, and every operator asks for them. If you arrive without a pair, the shop stop most trips make sells them for roughly 100 to 150 pesos. Sandals with a heel strap work; flip-flops do not.

None of the operators describes their trip as wheelchair accessible, and several also advise against it during pregnancy or with back problems. The canyon is steep, the surfaces are wet and the descent to the pools is a long flight of steps. If mobility is the deciding factor, ask the resort directly what the level areas are before you commit to a fourteen-hour day.

Before dawn. Pickups on the door-to-door trips start around 5.45 a.m. and the coach departures are earlier again, because four hours of the day are spent driving each way. Most return between 9 and 11 p.m.

You can drive in and pay at the gate, and for a confident driver with a free weekend that is a good call. What a guided departure buys is that nobody in your group drives the twenty-three hairpin curves in the dark, and that entry and the shopping stop are already handled. Check the current gate price with the resort before you set off.

There are restaurants inside the valley, and several trips include a roadside breakfast on the way up. Food is excluded from most fares, so carry pesos for it. Two departures include a meal at both ends of the day.

A forty-metre tunnel inside the cave system, held at around 40 °C by the rock itself, that behaves like a natural steam room. It is the part first-time visitors describe afterwards. You walk in through warm water rather than on a dry floor.

Lime and magnesium released by the surrounding rock, according to the operators who run the canyon daily. After heavy rain the colour can turn brown for a while when currents come down off the mountains. It settles again once the rain does.
